Titanic Calling: Low Bandwidth Video Conference from the Titanic Wreck

2024-10-15 · Fevziye Irem Eyiokur, Christian Huber, Thai-Binh Nguyen, Tuan-Nam Nguyen, Fabian Retkowski, Enes Yavuz Ugan, Dogucan Yaman, Alexander Waibel

In this paper, we report on communication experiments conducted in the summer of 2022 during a deep dive to the wreck of the Titanic. Radio transmission is not possible in deep sea water, and communication links rely on sonar signals. Due to the low bandwidth of sonar signals and the need to communicate readable data, text messaging is used in deep-sea missions. In this paper, we report results and experiences from a messaging system that converts speech to text in a submarine, sends text messages to the surface, and reconstructs those messages as synthetic lip-synchronous videos of the speakers. The resulting system was tested during an actual dive to Titanic in the summer of 2022. We achieved an acceptable latency for a system of such complexity as well as good quality. The system demonstration video can be found at the following link: https://youtu.be/C4lyM86-5Ig

Jumping on the bandwagon and off the Titanic: an experimental study of turnout in two-tier voting

2024-08-01 · Yoichi Hizen, Kazuya Kikuchi, Yukio Koriyama, Takehito Masuda

We experimentally study voter turnout in two-tier elections when the electorate consists of multiple groups, such as states. Votes are aggregated within the groups by the winner-take-all rule or the proportional rule, an…

IFShip: Interpretable Fine-grained Ship Classification with Domain Knowledge-Enhanced Vision-Language Models

2024-08-13 · Mingning Guo, Mengwei Wu, Yuxiang Shen, Haifeng Li 외

End-to-end interpretation currently dominates the remote sensing fine-grained ship classification (RS-FGSC) task. However, the inference process remains uninterpretable, leading to criticisms of these models as "black bo…

Causal Discovery for Explainable AI: A Dual-Encoding Approach

2026-01-29 · Henry Salgado, Meagan R. Kendall, Martine Ceberio arxiv

Understanding causal relationships among features is fundamental for explaining machine learning model decisions. However, traditional causal discovery methods face challenges with categorical variables due to numerical …

Iterative Domain Optimization

2020-05-12 · Raian Noufel Lefgoum

In this paper we study a new approach in optimization that aims to search a large domain D where a given function takes large, small or specific values via an iterative optimization algorithm based on the gradient. We sh…

Do intermediate feature coalitions aid explainability of black-box models?

2023-03-21 · Minal Suresh Patil, Kary Främling

This work introduces the notion of intermediate concepts based on levels structure to aid explainability for black-box models. The levels structure is a hierarchical structure in which each level corresponds to features …
