Two Differentially Private Rating Collection Mechanisms for Recommender Systems
We design two mechanisms for the recommender system to collect user ratings. One is modified Laplace mechanism, and the other is randomized response mechanism. We prove that they are both differentially private and preserve the data utility.

Differentially Private Confidence Intervals for Empirical Risk Minimization
The process of data mining with differential privacy produces results that are affected by two types of noise: sampling noise due to data collection and privacy noise that is designed to prevent the reconstruction of sen…
BIG-bench Machine LearningDPSR: Differentially Private Sparse Reconstruction via Multi-Stage Denoising for Recommender Systems
Differential privacy (DP) has emerged as the gold standard for protecting user data in recommender systems, but existing privacy-preserving mechanisms face a fundamental challenge: the privacy-utility tradeoff inevitably…
Collaborative FilteringDifferentially Private Chi-squared Test by Unit Circle Mechanism
This paper develops differentially private mechanisms for $\chi^2$ test of independence. While existing works put their effort into properly controlling the type-I error, in addition to that, we investigate the type…
Vocal Bursts Type PredictionDecentralized Matrix Factorization with Heterogeneous Differential Privacy
Conventional matrix factorization relies on centralized collection of users' data for recommendation, which might introduce an increased risk of privacy leakage especially when the recommender is untrusted. Existing diff…

This paper investigates the utility gain of using Iterative Bayesian Update (IBU) for private discrete distribution estimation using data obfuscated with Locally Differentially Private (LDP) mechanisms. We compare the pe…
