War Elephants: Rethinking Combat AI and Human Oversight

2024-04-30 · Philip Feldman, Aaron Dant, Harry Dreany

This paper explores the changes that pervasive AI is having on the nature of combat. We look beyond the substitution of AI for experts to an approach where complementary human and machine abilities are blended. Using historical and modern examples, we show how autonomous weapons systems can be effectively managed by teams of human "AI Operators" combined with AI/ML "Proxy Operators." By basing our approach on the principles of complementation, we provide for a flexible and dynamic approach to managing lethal autonomous systems. We conclude by presenting a path to achieving an integrated vision of machine-speed combat where the battlefield AI is operated by AI Operators that watch for patterns of behavior within battlefield to assess the performance of lethal autonomous systems. This approach enables the development of combat systems that are likely to be more ethical, operate at machine speed, and are capable of responding to a broader range of dynamic battlefield conditions than any purely autonomous AI system could support.

ElephantBook: A Semi-Automated Human-in-the-Loop System for Elephant Re-Identification

2021-06-29 · Peter Kulits, Jake Wall, Anka Bedetti, Michelle Henley 외

African elephants are vital to their ecosystems, but their populations are threatened by a rise in human-elephant conflict and poaching. Monitoring population dynamics is essential in conservation efforts; however, track…

An Analysis of Elephants' Movement Data in Sub-Saharan Africa Using Clustering

2021-11-05 · Gregory Glatzer, Prasenjit Mitra, Johnson Kinyua

Understanding the movement of animals is crucial to conservation efforts. Past research often focuses on factors affecting movement, rather than locations of interest that animals return to or habitat. We explore the use…

Inter and Intra-Annual Spatio-Temporal Variability of Habitat Suitability for Asian Elephants in India: A Random Forest Model-based Analysis

2021-07-22 · P. Anjali, Deepak N. Subramani

We develop a Random Forest model to estimate the species distribution of Asian elephants in India and study the inter and intra-annual spatiotemporal variability of habitats suitable for them. Climatic, topographic varia…

Collaborative Disagreement Resolution for Scalable Oversight

2026-06-02 · Yuyang Jiang, Chacha Chen, Teng Wu, Liwen Sun 외 arxiv

Debate, where AI agents argue opposing positions, has emerged as a key approach to scalable oversight. However, debate faces a fundamental tension: models are incentivized to be persuasive to the judge, which may not alw…

Poaching Hotspot Identification Using Satellite Imagery
