A Gibbs Sampler for Efficient Bayesian Inference in Sign-Identified SVARs

2025-05-29 · Jonas E. Arias, Juan F. Rubio-Ramírez, Minchul Shin

We develop a new algorithm for inference based on structural vector autoregressions (SVARs) identified with sign restrictions. The key insight of our algorithm is to break apart from the accept-reject tradition associated with sign-identified SVARs. We show that embedding an elliptical slice sampling within a Gibbs sampler approach can deliver dramatic gains in speed and turn previously infeasible applications into feasible ones. We provide a tractable example to illustrate the power of the elliptical slice sampling applied to sign-identified SVARs. We demonstrate the usefulness of our algorithm by applying it to a well-known small-SVAR model of the oil market featuring a tight identified set, as well as to a large SVAR model with more than 100 sign restrictions.

Adaptive Scan Gibbs Sampler for Large Scale Inference Problems

2018-01-27 · Vadim Smolyakov, Qiang Liu, John W. Fisher III

For large scale on-line inference problems the update strategy is critical for performance. We derive an adaptive scan Gibbs sampler that optimizes the update frequency by selecting an optimum mini-batch size. We demonst…

Fast Parallel SAME Gibbs Sampling on General Discrete Bayesian Networks

2015-11-19 · Daniel Seita, Haoyu Chen, John Canny

A fundamental task in machine learning and related fields is to perform inference on Bayesian networks. Since exact inference takes exponential time in general, a variety of approximate methods are used. Gibbs sampling i…

Particle-Gibbs Sampling For Bayesian Feature Allocation Models

2020-01-25 · Alexandre Bouchard-Côté, Andrew Roth

Bayesian feature allocation models are a popular tool for modelling data with a combinatorial latent structure. Exact inference in these models is generally intractable and so practitioners typically apply Markov Chain M…

Bayesian shrinkage in mixture of experts models: Identifying robust determinants of class membership

2019-01-12

A method for implicit variable selection in mixture of experts frameworks is proposed. We introduce a prior structure where information is taken from a set of independent covariates. Robust class membership predictors ar…
