A Unified Substrate for Body-Brain Co-evolution

2022-03-22 · Sidney Pontes-Filho, Kathryn Walker, Elias Najarro, Stefano Nichele, Sebastian Risi

The discovery of complex multicellular organism development took millions of years of evolution. The genome of such a multicellular organism guides the development of its body from a single cell, including its control system. Our goal is to imitate this natural process using a single neural cellular automaton (NCA) as a genome for modular robotic agents. In the introduced approach, called Neural Cellular Robot Substrate (NCRS), a single NCA guides the growth of a robot and the cellular activity which controls the robot during deployment. We also introduce three benchmark environments, which test the ability of the approach to grow different robot morphologies. In this paper, NCRSs are trained with covariance matrix adaptation evolution strategy (CMA-ES), and covariance matrix adaptation MAP-Elites (CMA-ME) for quality diversity, which we show leads to more diverse robot morphologies with higher fitness scores. While the NCRS can solve the easier tasks from our benchmark environments, the success rate reduces when the difficulty of the task increases. We discuss directions for future work that may facilitate the use of the NCRS approach for more complex domains.

Evolutionary Brain-Body Co-Optimization Consistently Fails to Select for Morphological Potential

2025-08-24 · Alican Mertan, Nick Cheney arxiv

Brain-body co-optimization remains a challenging problem, despite increasing interest from the community in recent years. To understand and overcome the challenges, we propose exhaustively mapping a morphology-fitness la…

Resting state brain networks from EEG: Hidden Markov states vs. classical microstates

2016-06-07 · Tammo Rukat, Adam Baker, Andrew Quinn, Mark Woolrich

Functional brain networks exhibit dynamics on the sub-second temporal scale and are often assumed to embody the physiological substrate of cognitive processes. Here we analyse the temporal and spatial dynamics of these s…

This position and survey paper identifies the emerging convergence of neuroscience, artificial general intelligence (AGI), and neuromorphic computing toward a unified research paradigm. Using a framework grounded in brai…

Intelligence as information processing: brains, swarms, and computers

Gait-learning with morphologically evolving robots generated by L-system

2021-07-17 · Jie Luo, Daan Zeeuwe, Agoston E. Eiben

When controllers (brains) and morphologies (bodies) of robots simultaneously evolve, this can lead to a problem, namely the brain & body mismatch problem. In this research, we propose a solution of lifetime learning. We …
