Basic concepts for the Kermack and McKendrick model with static heterogeneity

2023-11-19 · Hisashi Inaba

In this paper, we consider the infection-age-dependent Kermack--McKendrick model in which host individuals are distributed in a continuous state space. To provide a mathematical foundation for the heterogeneous model, we develop a $L^1$-framework to formulate basic epidemiological concepts. First, we show the mathematical well-posedness of the basic model under appropriate conditions allowing the unbounded parameters with non-compact domain. Next we define the basic reproduction number and prove the pandemic threshold theorem. We then present a systematic procedure to compute the effective reproduction number and the herd immunity threshold. Finally we give some illustrative examples and concrete results by using the separable mixing assumption.

A systematic procedure for incorporating separable static heterogeneity into compartmental epidemic models

2022-07-05 · Odo Diekmann, Hisashi Inaba

In this paper, we show how to modify a compartmental epidemic model, without changing the dimension, such that separable static heterogeneity is taken into account. The derivation is based on the Kermack-McKendrick renew…

A Kermack--McKendrick type epidemic model with double threshold phenomenon (and a possible application to Covid-19)

2024-09-25 · Joan Ponce, Horst R. Thieme

The suggestion by K.L. Cooke (1967) that infected individuals become infective if they are exposed often enough for a natural disease resistance to be overcome is built into a Kermack-McKendrick type epidemic model with …

Separable mixing: the general formulation and a particular example focusing on mask efficiency

2023-07-31 · M. C. J. Bootsma, K. M. D. Chan, O. Diekmann, H. Inaba

The aim of this short note is twofold. We formulate the general Kermack-McKendrick epidemic model incorporating static heterogeneity and show how it simplifies to a scalar Renewal Equation (RE) when separable mixing is a…

The deterministic Kermack-McKendrick model bounds the general stochastic epidemic

2017-02-10

We prove that, for Poisson transmission and recovery processes, the classic Susceptible $\to$ Infected $\to$ Recovered (SIR) epidemic model of Kermack and McKendrick provides, for any given time $t>0$, a strict lower bou…

Modelling epidemics: a perspective on mathematical models and their use in the present SARS-CoV-2 epidemic

2021-04-15 · Jorge X. Velasco-Hernandez

In this work we look at several mathematical models that have been constructed during the present pandemic to address dfferent issues of importance to public health policies about epidemic scenarios and thier causes. We …
