C-PMI: Conditional Pointwise Mutual Information for Turn-level Dialogue Evaluation

2023-06-27 · Liliang Ren, Mankeerat Sidhu, Qi Zeng, Revanth Gangi Reddy, Heng Ji, ChengXiang Zhai

Existing reference-free turn-level evaluation metrics for chatbots inadequately capture the interaction between the user and the system. Consequently, they often correlate poorly with human evaluations. To address this issue, we propose a novel model-agnostic approach that leverages Conditional Pointwise Mutual Information (C-PMI) to measure the turn-level interaction between the system and the user based on a given evaluation dimension. Experimental results on the widely used FED dialogue evaluation dataset demonstrate that our approach significantly improves the correlation with human judgment compared with existing evaluation systems. By replacing the negative log-likelihood-based scorer with our proposed C-PMI scorer, we achieve a relative 62.6% higher Spearman correlation on average for the FED evaluation metric. Our code is publicly available at https://github.com/renll/C-PMI.

PromptNCE: Pointwise Mutual Information Predictions Using Only LLMs and Contrastive Estimation Prompts

2026-05-20 · Juliette Woodrow, Chris Piech arxiv

Estimating mutual information from text usually requires training a task-specific critic, which limits its use in low-data settings. We ask whether large language models can instead estimate pointwise mutual information …

Human-like informative conversations: Better acknowledgements using conditional mutual information

2021-04-16 · NAACL 2021 4 · Ashwin Paranjape, Christopher D. Manning

This work aims to build a dialogue agent that can weave new factual content into conversations as naturally as humans. We draw insights from linguistic principles of conversational analysis and annotate human-human conve…

Grounding Language with Vision: A Conditional Mutual Information Calibrated Decoding Strategy for Reducing Hallucinations in LVLMs

2025-05-26 · Hao Fang, Changle Zhou, Jiawei Kong, Kuofeng Gao 외

Large Vision-Language Models (LVLMs) are susceptible to hallucinations, where generated responses seem semantically plausible yet exhibit little or no relevance to the input image. Previous studies reveal that this issue…

On the Properties and Estimation of Pointwise Mutual Information Profiles

2023-10-16 · Paweł Czyż, Frederic Grabowski, Julia E. Vogt, Niko Beerenwinkel 외

The pointwise mutual information profile, or simply profile, is the distribution of pointwise mutual information for a given pair of random variables. One of its important properties is that its expected value is precise…
