Carbon Dioxide as a Pollutant. The Risks of Rising Atmospheric CO$_2$ Levels on Human Health and on the Stability of the Biosphere

2024-08-15 · Ugo Bardi

Carbon dioxide is a chemically active molecule that plays a vital role in Earth's ecosphere. CO$_2$ affects the acidity of seawater and has multiple negative effects on marine organisms. It is also a fundamental component of the photosynthesis and respiration reactions. There is evidence that higher CO$_2$ concentration can make the photosynthetic reaction faster in some plants, but also negatively impact the respiration reaction in aerobic lifeforms. The effects of this chemical and biochemical perturbation on the biosphere and on human health may be more important than generally highlighted in the discussion on CO$_2$, usually focused on thermal effects only. These considerations stress the importance of rapidly reducing CO$_2$ emissions and, whenever possible, remove the excess from the atmosphere. They also show that geoengineering technologies based on Solar Radiation Management (SRM) alone cannot be sufficient to contrast the negative effects of CO$_2$ anthropogenic emissions.

Environmental Drivers of Respiratory Disease: A District Level Analysis

2026-07-05 · Rahim Iqbal, Asfi Ahamed, Izzath Nisfer, Shazan Shaheed 외 arxiv

Sri Lanka has experienced a decade of progressive forest degradation and rising atmospheric pollution, yet district-level respiratory admissions have paradoxically declined, pointing to the confounding role of healthcare…

Assessing the Lockdown Effects on Air Quality during COVID-19 Era

2021-06-25 · Ioannis Kavouras, Eftychios Protopapadakis, Maria Kaselimia, Emmanuel Sardis 외

In this work we investigate the short-term variations in air quality emissions, attributed to the prevention measures, applied in different cities, to mitigate the COVID-19 spread. In particular, we emphasize on the conc…

Optimal pricing for carbon dioxide removal under inter-regional leakage

2022-12-19 · Max Franks, Matthias Kalkuhl, Kai Lessmann

Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) moves atmospheric carbon to geological or land-based sinks. In a first-best setting, the optimal use of CDR is achieved by a removal subsidy that equals the optimal carbon tax and marginal da…

Ontology-Based Knowledge Modeling and Uncertainty-Aware Outdoor Air Quality Assessment Using Weighted Interval Type-2 Fuzzy Logic
