Complex data labeling with deep learning methods: Lessons from fisheries acoustics

2020-10-21 · J. M. A. Sarr, T. Brochier, P. Brehmer, Y. Perrot, A. Bah, A. Sarré, M. A. Jeyid, M. Sidibeh, S. El Ayoub

Quantitative and qualitative analysis of acoustic backscattered signals from the seabed bottom to the sea surface is used worldwide for fish stocks assessment and marine ecosystem monitoring. Huge amounts of raw data are collected yet require tedious expert labeling. This paper focuses on a case study where the ground truth labels are non-obvious: echograms labeling, which is time-consuming and critical for the quality of fisheries and ecological analysis. We investigate how these tasks can benefit from supervised learning algorithms and demonstrate that convolutional neural networks trained with non-stationary datasets can be used to stress parts of a new dataset needing human expert correction. Further development of this approach paves the way toward a standardization of the labeling process in fisheries acoustics and is a good case study for non-obvious data labeling processes.

Cost-benefit analysis of ecosystem modelling to support fisheries management

2024-03-26 · Matthew H. Holden, Eva E. Plagányi, Elizabeth A. Fulton, Alexander B. Campbell 외

Mathematical and statistical models underlie many of the world's most important fisheries management decisions. Since the 19th century, difficulty calibrating and fitting such models has been used to justify the selectio…

Decision Support Systems in Fisheries and Aquaculture: A systematic review

2016-11-25 · Bjørn Magnus Mathisen, Peter Haro, Bård Hanssen, Sara Björk 외

Decision support systems help decision makers make better decisions in the face of complex decision problems (e.g. investment or policy decisions). Fisheries and Aquaculture is a domain where decision makers face such de…

An Iterative Labeling Method for Annotating Fisheries Imagery

2022-04-27 · Zhiyong Zhang, Pushyami Kaveti, Hanumant Singh, Abigail Powell 외

In this paper, we present a methodology for fisheries-related data that allows us to converge on a labeled image dataset by iterating over the dataset with multiple training and production loops that can exploit crowdsou…

Bioeconomic analysis of harvesting within a predator-prey system: A case study in the Chesapeake Bay fisheries

2022-09-14 · Iordanka Panayotova, John Herrmann, Nathan Kolling

Sustainable use of biological resources is very important as over exploitation on the long run may lead to stock depletion, which in turn may threaten biodiversity. The Chesapeake Bay is an extremely complex ecosystem, a…
