Inference Trees: Adaptive Inference with Exploration

2018-06-25 · Tom Rainforth, Yuan Zhou, Xiaoyu Lu, Yee Whye Teh, Frank Wood, Hongseok Yang, Jan-Willem van de Meent

We introduce inference trees (ITs), a new class of inference methods that build on ideas from Monte Carlo tree search to perform adaptive sampling in a manner that balances exploration with exploitation, ensures consistency, and alleviates pathologies in existing adaptive methods. ITs adaptively sample from hierarchical partitions of the parameter space, while simultaneously learning these partitions in an online manner. This enables ITs to not only identify regions of high posterior mass, but also maintain uncertainty estimates to track regions where significant posterior mass may have been missed. ITs can be based on any inference method that provides a consistent estimate of the marginal likelihood. They are particularly effective when combined with sequential Monte Carlo, where they capture long-range dependencies and yield improvements beyond proposal adaptation alone.

Rapid Posterior Exploration in Bayesian Non-negative Matrix Factorization

2016-10-27 · M. Arjumand Masood, Finale Doshi-Velez

Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) is a popular tool for data exploration. Bayesian NMF promises to also characterize uncertainty in the factorization. Unfortunately, current inference approaches such as MCMC mix sl…

Fast Inference of Visual Autoregressive Model with Adjacency-Adaptive Dynamical Draft Trees

2025-12-26 · Haodong Lei, Hongsong Wang, Xin Geng, Liang Wang 외 arxiv

Autoregressive (AR) image models achieve diffusion-level quality but suffer from sequential inference, requiring approximately 2,000 steps for a 576x576 image. Speculative decoding with draft trees accelerates LLMs yet u…

Leaping through tree space: continuous phylogenetic inference for rooted and unrooted trees

2023-06-09 · Matthew J Penn, Neil Scheidwasser, Joseph Penn, Christl A Donnelly 외

Phylogenetics is now fundamental in life sciences, providing insights into the earliest branches of life and the origins and spread of epidemics. However, finding suitable phylogenies from the vast space of possible tree…
