Inter-state switching in stochastic gene expression: Exact solution, an adiabatic limit and oscillations in molecular distributions

2018-08-23 · K. G. Petrosyan

We consider the stochastic gene expression process with inter-state flip-flops. An exact steady-state solution to the master equation is calculated. One of the main goals in this paper is to investigate whether the probability distribution of gene copies contains even-odd number oscillations. A master equation previously derived in the adiabatic limit of fast switching by Kepler and Elston \cite{kepler} suggests that the oscillations should be present. However our analysis demonstrates that the oscillations do not happen not only in the adiabatic case but they are entirely absent. We discuss the adiabatic approximation in detail. The other goal is to establish the master equation that takes into account external fluctuations that is similar to the master equation in the adiabatic approximation. The equation allows even-odd oscillations. The reason the behaviour occurs is an underlying interference of Poisson and Gaussian processes. The master equation contains an extra term that describes the gene copy number unconventional diffusion and is responsible for the oscillations. We also point out to a similar phenomenon in quantum physics.

Exact power spectrum in a minimal hybrid model of stochastic gene expression oscillations

2019-09-21 · Chen Jia, Hong Qian, Michael Q. Zhang

Stochastic oscillations in individual cells are usually characterized by a non-monotonic power spectrum with an oscillatory autocorrelation function. Here we develop an analytical approach of stochastic oscillations in a…

Uncovering the effect of RNA polymerase steric interactions on gene expression noise: analytical distributions of nascent and mature RNA numbers

2023-04-11 · Juraj Szavits-Nossan, Ramon Grima

The telegraph model is the standard model of stochastic gene expression, which can be solved exactly to obtain the distribution of mature RNA numbers per cell. A modification of this model also leads to an analytical dis…

Stochastic phenotype transition of a single cell in an intermediate region of gene-state switching

2015-10-27

Multiple phenotypic states often arise in a single cell with different gene-expression states that undergo transcription regulation with positive feedback. Recent experiments have shown that at least in E. coli, the gene…

2020-01-08 · Chen Jia, Ramon Grima

A stochastic model of autoregulated bursty gene expression by Kumar et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 268105 (2014)] has been exactly solved in steady-state conditions under the implicit assumption that protein numbers are s…
