Machine Learning for Two-Sample Testing under Right-Censored Data: A Simulation Study

2024-09-12 · Petr Philonenko, Sergey Postovalov

The focus of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of Machine Learning (ML) methods for two-sample testing with right-censored observations. To achieve this, we develop several ML-based methods with varying architectures and implement them as two-sample tests. Each method is an ensemble (stacking) that combines predictions from classical two-sample tests. This paper presents the results of training the proposed ML methods, examines their statistical power compared to classical two-sample tests, analyzes the null distribution of the proposed methods when the null hypothesis is true, and evaluates the significance of the features incorporated into the proposed methods. In total, this work covers 18 methods for two-sample testing under right-censored observations, including the proposed methods and classical well-studied two-sample tests. All results from numerical experiments were obtained from a synthetic dataset generated using the inverse transform sampling method and replicated multiple times through Monte Carlo simulation. To test the two-sample problem with right-censored observations, one can use the proposed two-sample methods (scripts, dataset, and models are available on GitHub and Hugging Face).

Proper Scoring Rules for Right-Censored Survival Data

2026-06-04 · Jef Jonkers, Glenn Van Wallendael, Luc Duchateau, Sofie Van Hoecke arxiv

Proper scoring rules provide a rigorous theoretical basis for the training and evaluation of probabilistic forecasts. However, in the presence of right censoring, the event time is only partially observed, rendering conv…

A kernel- and optimal transport- based test of independence between covariates and right-censored lifetimes

2019-06-10 · David Rindt, Dino Sejdinovic, David Steinsaltz

We propose a nonparametric test of independence, termed optHSIC, between a covariate and a right-censored lifetime. Because the presence of censoring creates a challenge in applying the standard permutation-based testing…

Neural Model-based Optimization with Right-Censored Observations

In many fields of study, we only observe lower bounds on the true response value of some experiments. When fitting a regression model to predict the distribution of the outcomes, we cannot simply drop these right-censore…

Machine Learning for Online Algorithm Selection under Censored Feedback

2021-09-13 · Alexander Tornede, Viktor Bengs, Eyke Hüllermeier

In online algorithm selection (OAS), instances of an algorithmic problem class are presented to an agent one after another, and the agent has to quickly select a presumably best algorithm from a fixed set of candidate al…

A kernel log-rank test of independence for right-censored data

2019-12-08 · Tamara Fernandez, Arthur Gretton, David Rindt, Dino Sejdinovic

We introduce a general non-parametric independence test between right-censored survival times and covariates, which may be multivariate. Our test statistic has a dual interpretation, first in terms of the supremum of a p…
