Mo' States Mo' Problems: Emergency Stop Mechanisms from Observation

2019-12-03 · NeurIPS 2019 12 · Samuel Ainsworth, Matt Barnes, Siddhartha Srinivasa

In many environments, only a relatively small subset of the complete state space is necessary in order to accomplish a given task. We develop a simple technique using emergency stops (e-stops) to exploit this phenomenon. Using e-stops significantly improves sample complexity by reducing the amount of required exploration, while retaining a performance bound that efficiently trades off the rate of convergence with a small asymptotic sub-optimality gap. We analyze the regret behavior of e-stops and present empirical results in discrete and continuous settings demonstrating that our reset mechanism can provide order-of-magnitude speedups on top of existing reinforcement learning methods.

Learning Safe-Stoppability Monitors for Humanoid Robots

2026-03-24 · Yifan Sun, Yiyuan Pan, Shangtao Li, Caiwu Ding 외 arxiv

Emergency stop (E-stop) mechanisms are the de facto standard for robot safety. However, for humanoid robots, abruptly cutting power can itself cause catastrophic failures; instead, an emergency stop must execute a predef…

Emergency Stopping for Liquid-manipulating Robots

2026-04-17 · Samuli Hynninen, Ville Kyrki arxiv

Manipulating open liquid containers is challenging because liquids are highly sensitive to vessel accelerations and jerks. Although spill-free liquid manipulation has been widely studied, emergency stopping under unexpec…

Pedestrian Path, Pose and Intention Prediction through Gaussian Process Dynamical Models and Pedestrian Activity Recognition

2020-04-30 · Raul Quintero, Ignacio Parra, David Fernandez Llorca, Miguel Angel Sotelo

According to several reports published by worldwide organisations, thousands of pedestrians die in road accidents every year. Due to this fact, vehicular technologies have been evolving with the intent of reducing these …

Hierarchical Planning for Resource Allocation in Emergency Response Systems

2020-12-24 · Geoffrey Pettet, Ayan Mukhopadhyay, Mykel Kochenderfer, Abhishek Dubey

A classical problem in city-scale cyber-physical systems (CPS) is resource allocation under uncertainty. Typically, such problems are modeled as Markov (or semi-Markov) decision processes. While online, offline, and dece…
