The iterative proportional fitting algorithm and the NM-method: solutions for two different sets of problems

2023-03-08 · Anna Naszodi

In this paper, we identify two different sets of problems. The first covers the problems that the iterative proportional fitting (IPF) algorithm was developed to solve. These concern completing a population table by using a sample. The other set concerns constructing a counterfactual population table with the purpose of comparing two populations. The IPF is commonly applied by social scientists to solve problems not only in the first set, but also in the second one. We show that while it is legitimate to use the IPF for the first set of problems, it is not the right tool to address the problems of the second kind. We promote an alternative of the IPF, the NM-method, for solving problems in the second set. We provide both theoretical and empirical comparisons of these methods.

Quantitative Uniform Stability of the Iterative Proportional Fitting Procedure

2021-08-18 · George Deligiannidis, Valentin De Bortoli, Arnaud Doucet

We establish the uniform in time stability, w.r.t. the marginals, of the Iterative Proportional Fitting Procedure, also known as Sinkhorn algorithm, used to solve entropy-regularised Optimal Transport problems. Our resul…

Gaussian entropic optimal transport: Schrödinger bridges and the Sinkhorn algorithm

2024-12-24 · O. Deniz Akyildiz, Pierre Del Moral, Joaquín Miguez

Entropic optimal transport problems are regularized versions of optimal transport problems. These models play an increasingly important role in machine learning and generative modelling. For finite spaces, these problems…

Diffusion & Adversarial Schrödinger Bridges via Iterative Proportional Markovian Fitting

2024-10-03 · Sergei Kholkin, Grigoriy Ksenofontov, David Li, Nikita Kornilov 외

The Iterative Markovian Fitting (IMF) procedure based on iterative reciprocal and Markovian projections has recently been proposed as a powerful method for solving the Schr\"odinger Bridge problem. However, it has been o…

The derivatives of Sinkhorn-Knopp converge

2022-07-26 · Edouard Pauwels, Samuel Vaiter

We show that the derivatives of the Sinkhorn-Knopp algorithm, or iterative proportional fitting procedure, converge towards the derivatives of the entropic regularization of the optimal transport problem with a locally u…

Internal multi-portfolio rebalancing processes: Linking resource allocation models and biproportional matrix techniques to portfolio management

2022-01-17 · Kelli Francis-Staite

This paper describes multi-portfolio `internal' rebalancing processes used in the finance industry. Instead of trading with the market to `externally' rebalance, these internal processes detail how portfolio managers buy…
