The qualitative accuracy of the Becker-DeGroot-Marshak method

2023-02-08 · Maximilian Späth

The Becker DeGroot Marshak method is widely used to elicit the valuation that an individual assigns to an object. Theoretically, the second-price structure of the method gives individuals the incentive to state their true valuation. Yet, the elicitation methods empirical accuracy is subject to debate. With this paper, I provide a clear verification of the qualitative accuracy of the method. Participants of an incentivized laboratory experiment can sell a virtual object. The value of the object is publicly known and experimentally varied in a between-subjects design. Replicating previous findings on the low quantitative accuracy, I observe a very small share of individuals placing a payoff-optimal stated valuation. However, the analysis shows that the stated valuation increases with the value of the object. This result shows the qualitative accuracy of the BDM method and suggests that the method can be applied in comparative studies.

Nondistortionary belief elicitation

2025-06-13 · Marcin Pęski, Colin Stewart

A researcher wants to ask a decision-maker about a belief related to a choice the decision-maker made; examples include eliciting confidence or cognitive uncertainty. When can the researcher provide incentives for the de…

Supervised Machine Learning for Eliciting Individual Demand

2019-04-30 · John A. Clithero, Jae Joon Lee, Joshua Tasoff

Direct elicitation, guided by theory, is the standard method for eliciting latent preferences. The canonical direct-elicitation approach for measuring individuals' valuations for goods is the Becker-DeGroot-Marschak proc…

The efficacy of the sugar-free labels is reduced by the health-sweetness tradeoff

2023-11-16 · Ksenia Panidi, Yaroslava Grebenschikova, Vasily Klucharev

In the present study, we use an experimental setting to explore the effects of sugar-free labels on the willingness to pay for food products. In our experiment, participants placed bids for sugar-containing and analogous…
