What do we learn from a large-scale study of pre-trained visual representations in sim and real environments?

We present a large empirical investigation on the use of pre-trained visual representations (PVRs) for training downstream policies that execute real-world tasks. Our study involves five different PVRs, each trained for five distinct manipulation or indoor navigation tasks. We performed this evaluation using three different robots and two different policy learning paradigms. From this effort, we can arrive at three insights: 1) the performance trends of PVRs in the simulation are generally indicative of their trends in the real world, 2) the use of PVRs enables a first-of-its-kind result with indoor ImageNav (zero-shot transfer to a held-out scene in the real world), and 3) the benefits from variations in PVRs, primarily data-augmentation and fine-tuning, also transfer to the real-world performance. See project website for additional details and visuals.

Effect of scale on catastrophic forgetting in neural networks

2021-09-29 · ICLR 2022 4 · Vinay Venkatesh Ramasesh, Aitor Lewkowycz, Ethan Dyer

Catastrophic forgetting presents a challenge in developing deep learning models capable of continual learning, i.e. learning tasks sequentially. Recently, both computer vision and natural-language processing have witness…

Mapping the Methodological Space of Classroom Interaction Research: Scale, Duration, and Modality in an Age of AI

2026-04-30 · Dorottya Demszky, Edith Bouton, Alison Twiner, Sara Hennessy 외 arxiv

Research on classroom interaction has long been divided between large-scale observation and in-depth ethnographic work. We propose a framework mapping this methodological space along three dimensions--scale, duration, an…

A Large-scale Study of Representation Learning with the Visual Task Adaptation Benchmark

2019-10-01 · arXiv 2020 2 · Xiaohua Zhai, Joan Puigcerver, Alexander Kolesnikov, Pierre Ruyssen 외

Representation learning promises to unlock deep learning for the long tail of vision tasks without expensive labelled datasets. Yet, the absence of a unified evaluation for general visual representations hinders progress…

Considerations for health care institutions training large language models on electronic health records

2023-08-24 · Weipeng Zhou, Danielle Bitterman, Majid Afshar, Timothy A. Miller

Large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT have excited scientists across fields; in medicine, one source of excitement is the potential applications of LLMs trained on electronic health record (EHR) data. But there are t…
